How Does God Speak To You?

How Does God Speak To You? - Lisa U Maki

Does God speak to you? If He does, in what way? If He does not, why?
Jesus said in John 10:27: My sheep hear my voice. It is pretty obvious that if you are truly His sheep, then you will hear His voice. There are only two reasons I can think of on why you can't hear the voice of God, if you claim to be His sheep. Either you are not really His sheep, or there is a sin in your life that is hindering you from hearing His voice.
This article is for the true sheep of Jesus. However, if you are not hearing His voice and you want to hear Him, then this article will help you get there.
Let me lay first the foundations of hearing God's voice.
First, you have to be totally surrendered to Him, meaning, you always seek for His perfect will for you, and you obey Him completely.
Second, you need a daily, consistent, prayer life. When I say prayer life, I mean, a quiet time alone with God where you bask in His presence, commune with Him, and hear from Him through His Word.
Third, you have to be a seeker. Jeremiah 29:13 says: You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. You have to be desperate for God and His leading for you. You have to pursue Him.
Fourth, you have to be a faith walker, meaning, you believe in every single thing that God tells you and you take His Word for what it is, without questions or doubt.
Fifth, you have to know how to wait on God. You don't rush your time with Him, nor do you rush Him to reveal something to you.
Sixth, you need to have a life of daily repentance.
Seventh, you need to have a life of servitude.
Once you have all these foundations set, then there is no doubt that you will be hearing God's voice.
How does God speak?
God speaks in different ways. He can speak to you audibly, just like what He did with Samuel (1 Samuel 3). He can speak through your thoughts. He can speak through a church leader or a prophet, which was how God spoke to the Israelites during the Old Testament. He can speak through other people (sometimes even those who are not saved or not strong in the Lord...remember, God even used a donkey to speak to Balaam in Numbers 22). And He can speak through His Word, which is always the case with me.
Most of the time, when God uses other people to speak to you, it is just a confirmation of what you already know in your spirit, because He has already spoken it to you.
Can you make a mistake in hearing from God? Yes you can. There are times when you may think it is God speaking to you, but actually, it is your own desire that you are hearing in your mind. It can also be that the enemy is deceiving you. This can be avoided if you follow the foundations I laid down earlier.
Another way to confirm if what you hear is from the Lord or not is found in 1 John 4:7 that says that there are three witnesses in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit.
The Father represents peace, the Word is the Word of God, and the Holy Spirit is the quickening in your spirit. When all these three are present when you receive some revelation, then you will surely know that it is from God.
If all of us, true believers, will learn to tap into this great privilege that we have of hearing the voice of God, then all our paths will be properly guided and directed. We would know when to move and when to stop, when to say yes and when to say no, when to attack and when to retaliate.
We should speak the same words that Samuel spoke: Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.
